About The Panic Away Anxiety Help Program
Anxiety treatment uses several
approaches and anxiety itself may be associated with almost anything. It might
be a general fear about "what could go wrong," fears regarding personal or
social inadequacy, or even highly specific discomfort connected to
particular situations or objects.
An excellent example of this object related anxiety was a recent documentary I
saw about a man who
had an unreasoning terror of baked beans. He had great difficulty walking
down supermarket canned goods aisles and could
not bring
himself to touch a
can of them.
The good news for those needing anxiety help
or anxiety treatment is that, in general, whatever particular form the disturbance
takes, the basic
ways in which it occurs - and can be handled - are increasingly understood.

Many seeking anxiety help will have
considered the
possibility of medication to alleviate their condition but this is generally not considered a first option, except in
instances of
extreme or crirical stress where rapid intervention may be wise.
Anxiety
medications (which may include benzodiazepines and antidepressants), while useful in temporarily reducing the
symptoms of stress,
generally do not address
the mental and other causes which can be identified and handled in other avenues of anxiety
treatment.
Anxiety Treatment Techniques
One such treatment is CBT or Cognitive behavioural therapy. CBT is a professional therapeutic
approach in which the cognitions [thoughts] of the sufferer are investigated and identified as causes of
anxiety.
Cognitive therapy is a penetrating type of
anxiety help in that it reveals the underlying
beliefs a person holds and shows how these tend to give rise to
anxious or negative thoughts and feelings.
- Simple
example: A child has been read a story in which an
ogre who lives in a
dark cave eats some children. Taking this to heart, the child, wanting to get up
in the night
thinks "it's dark and an ogre might jump out and eat me!" Naturally, feelings
of anxiety
arise with this thought.
- Adult life
example: a woman who believes that "the world is a godless,
evil place" is invited to a public meeting about a new community intiative in her area. Without any evidence,
she decides "it's just another corrupt trick of some kind to suck
money out of us!" - and she feels anxious, paranoid and hostile.
Most of us do
this to some degree, but if our negative beliefs are too serious or too numerous, we begin to create a frightening
mental landscape - the landscape of anxiety disorders.
Approaches in CBT style anxiety treatment include:
- Rational self
talk - stabilizing yourself in the midst of fears
by using reason
and common sense.
- Cognitive
challenging - where
negative thoughts or beliefs are
questioned or "challenged" as they arise, and
- Cognitive
restructuring - where
non-threatening, constructive
thoughts are put in to replace the anxiety producing ones.
Behavioral therapy can also
include gradually
increasing the sufferer's exposure to that which is feared - slowly
increasing their comfortable "tolerance" of
it.
Case example: A man (as above) finds baked beans somewhat terrifying. Coupled with some of the more mental
approaches already discussed, the therapist begins by getting him to relax about a nearby a4 picture of baked
beans.
When that's allowable,
therapy might progress to him learning to tolerate a poster depicting baked beans on a household wall,
then later to him actually holding and viewing some baked bean product ads. Further on in the process, he might
stand near some on a supermarket shelf and on subsequent occasions, handle a canful, buy some, and finally even
prepare and eat them.
And at this point,
you'd better hope like
hell he's not allergic to
them!
Others factors which may be addressed in anxiety treatment are dietary, general
health, exercise and
personal environment factors; suffering from anxiety when your spouse keeps a lion for a pet is not considered an
anxiety disorder!
Some anxiety help programs also
incorporate relaxation techniques, breathing, meditative exercises, hypnosis, etc.
